Assignments
Your instructor may assign you the following assignments:

Lesson 1.1
Assignment #1 -- Gather Family Information
Gather information about your family either by mail, phone, email, or interview. Try to gather 4-5 generations of information on your ancestors. Use a blank pedigree chart and family group sheets to assist you. This information may not be turned in (check with your instructor), but your efforts will appear on your next assignment.

Lesson 1.2
Assignment #2 -- Print out a Family Group Record
Enter your genealogical findings into PAF. Include your grandparents, parents and siblings. Try to include all the up-to-date data.
Print out a family group record with your father and mother as the husband and wife. Your name must appear as the submitter, and a source must appear for each piece of information (birth date, birth place, etc.) on the report.

Assignment #3 -- Print out a Pedigree Chart
Enter your genealogical findings into PAF. Include your parents, grandparents, great-grandparents and 2nd great grandparents if possible.
Print out a 5-generation pedigree chart with you as the starting person. Your name must appear as the submitter.

Lesson 2
Assignment #4 -- New FamilySearch
Register with new FamilySearch and get familiar with the home page and help center. Click on the tab, "Me and My Ancestors" and print a family group record and 4-generation pedigree chart.

Assignment #5 -- Print findings from new FamilySearch
Click on the Search tab located at the top of the screen and conduct a search for an ancestor. Once you find your ancestor, click on the link left of your ancestor's name, "Go To." This link will take you to a pedigree view of your ancestor. Print this page.

Note: You may not find an ancestor. If you do not, search for someone with the same surname. If you still do not find anyone, search for Thomas Jefferson, born in 1743 in Virginia and his wife Martha Wayles, born 1748, also in Virginia.

Lesson 3.1
Assignment #6 -- Perform a Surname Search in the FHLC:
Click here to open FamilySearch.org. Click on Library, then Family History Library Catalog.
Perform a surname search for your ancestor.
Print a record which includes an ancestral surname.

Assignment #7 -- Perform a Place Search in the FHLC:
Click here to open FamilySearch.org. Click on Library, then Family History Library Catalog.
Perform a place search for an ancestral locality.
Print 2 records of interest.

Assignment #8 -- Internet Research:
Spend time using at least 2 of the above websites for your family history.
Print 1 page of interest for each site.

Lesson 3.2
Assignment #9 -- Visit a family history center
Visit a family history center near you.
Write a short summary, telling of your experiences and any findings. Include a copy of a finding where possible. 

Lesson 3.3
Assignment #10 -- GEDCOM from Ancestral File

  1. Click here to open FamilySearch.org. Click on search.
  2. Click Ancestral File on the left of the screen.
  3. Type in an ancestor's first name and last name, then click search. Remember: you will not find living people in this file.
  4. Review the results and find your ancestor or an individual of interest and click their name. You will be taken to the Individual View. (If you do not find any ancestors in Ancestral File, search for someone with the same surname. If you still do not find anyone, search for Thomas Jefferson, born in 1743 in Virginia. At step 8, import your information into a blank PAF file instead of your own.
  5. To view the pedigree, click Pedigree.
  6. When you reach the pedigree screen, click Download GEDCOM.
  7. You will be asked to open or save the file. SAVE the file on your hard drive or disk.
  8. Use what you have learned above and import your file into PAF. Then do any match/merging that is needed.
  9. Print a pedigree chart from PAF of the 4 generations you imported.

Lesson 4.1
Assignment #11 -- FamilySearch Wiki
Familiarize yourself with the home page of the Research Wiki (https://wiki.familysearch.org). Then conduct a search for a country (other than the one in which you live). Explore the information provided for that country and then print that country's web page.

Lesson 4.2
Assignment #12 -- Record Search
Familiarize yourself with the home page of the Record Search, also referred to as FamilySearch Pilot, (http://pilot.familysearch.org). Then conduct a search for an ancestor. After locating your ancestor on your results list, click on their name and print the transcribed document's information. You may also print the original record.

Lesson 4.3
Assignment #13 -- FamilySearch Indexing
Register for FamilySearch Indexing at www.familysearchindexing.org and complete a batch. Print the screen when you have completed the batch to show your work.
